This lesson plan is about taking United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals in the classroom. This will foster the essence of global citizenship in the young minds, starting early from the school.

Steps: 

Day 1:

Have a picture of Hunger Plate on the table to initiate students' thinking. Introduce basic words related to the activity such as food, hunger, community etc. Divide the class into few groups. Each group will then be given any food item, some food items that we get from animals, and told to discuss about the various sources of food. They can also mention the food items made in Food Factories. Learners will record their discussion and would have a clear idea about the different sources of food. The students will be shown various SDGs mounted on the wall. The teacher will demonstrate these goals - which are meant to be achieved by 2030. The learners will discuss about the importance of global connect to achieve these SDGs. The responses of the learners are recorded for further discussion. Then the teacher will ask the learners about the most important goal with respect to the current situation of the world. The learners will be asked to do their research on various SDGs for further discussion. Then the students will discuss the next goal.

Day 2:

The learners will be asked to collect information about few countries and put it on their the classroom door. The learners will then virtually visit these countries using Skype. The learners will talk to the other students about their staple food item and then they will discuss the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals. The learners will locate different countries using the atlas and they would make connection with the other classrooms. They would set the Skype connections with their community members and global members in order to understand about their culture and tradition.

Day 3:

Learners will be given the food items and then they will be asked to discuss how much is required to suffice their hunger. They can record their observations and discuss it with the other classrooms. The students will prepare different Info-graphics on various countries so that they can understand different traditions and culture around the world. The learners will then discuss their vision and perspective of Global Citizenship. This will promote their language skills; communication skills and it will build up confidence in talking to other people.

Day 4:

Learners will visit few restaurants to get an idea about the wastage of food. The students will then discuss with the owners of these restaurants about the wastage of food. Learners can also discuss the following:

  • problems they encountered during convincing people not to waste food and how they solved it.
  • how their discussion will help solve the problem they are working on.
  • how modern connections are used to bring in global impact.

Themes Incorporated:

Theme #1 - Map It - Students will locate different countries on the world map, and they will be able to identify different time zones.
Theme #2 - Care About - Students will interact with different classrooms and will know the diversity of the world, hence feel connected with the rest of the world.
Theme #3 - Connect with Your Community - Students will take community service project and visit community service places to bring in awareness. Students will donate basic necessities to the under privileged.
Theme #4 - Join a Global Collaborative Projects - Students will be connected through Skype with the other class rooms and talk about UN SGDs 02 ZERO HUNGER. This will help student sensitize about the wastage of food.

  • Analyzing impact of wasting food on farmers and the under privileged.

  • Learners listen to others without interrupting and practice restraint from speaking out of turn and pay attention to everyone's views.

  • Learners recognize that problems can have more than one solution and to meet the UN SDGs its essential to join hands with the learners from other countries as well.
  • Learners think and analyse thoroughly a problem, understand reasons behind a problem and ways to solve it.
  • Learners solve problems with others by discussing the issues and the probable solutions.

Learners will learn of and be able to discuss ZERO HUNGER and the impact of wasting food on the planet earth, farmers, underprivileged and consequently on our environment, and will participate in several activities that require teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Learners recognize that we can connect to different classrooms through Skype and can share ideas and views to attain United Nation SDGs 02 that ZERO HUNGER.

Impact & Future Plans

I am excited and enthusiastic towards this project. Once undergoing the study of various goals defined by United Nation those to be achieved till 2030, learners are going to be extremely motivated to prevent the wastage of food and then helping in restoring the natural resources. I also believe that the students will appreciate this whole exercise, that something as simple as making posters and Skype Connection can bring in awareness and a simple step could bring in change. A simple step of awareness and action will be a lesson in creative thinking and problem solving, and I am positive they will actively participate in these kinds of community service projects in the future.

Ideas for future implementation could include a charity and community service to promote Save Food and bring in awareness that wasting food is destroying our planet.
