My first day as a teacher ~ Harini A S

I am not a teacher by profession, I  worked in software field for almost 15 years starting my career as a programmer and quit as senior architect.

I juggled my work and looking after young son for 8-9 years, working half day for sometime, leaving my son in the day care before they even sweep the place. Finally I decided to quit my job...

In growing up years of my son, I always used to look at alternative ways of teaching, taking my son along with his friends to Rangashankara's children play, introducing them to tradition games, teaching maths with tamarind seeds, introducing him to AmarChitra Khata, Tinkle and many more...

When my son was in 2nd standard, in their school they used to  invite parent of every child for a week and request them to teach something valuable to kids. By the time my turn came, my son had warned me not to tell any story and not to teach any academic subjects. So  I thought of introducing traditional games like Chowkabara, aluguli mane, Pagade..

I reached the school with algulimane, kavade, traditional pagade board...I was little tensed because I was never interacted with 35-40 children together and not sure whether I will be able to sustain their interest..But when I opened all the objects ,children including class teacher were amazed and kids started sharing their experience with these games.

I was so happy to see these kids' interest in traditional games against the current fad of playing with playstations, mobiles, ipads...

The experience gave me more satisfaction than completing the project in office...

After I quit the job , I started involving more with the kids.. started looking for opportunities to interact with kids...started working as a civic tutor teaching civic awareness in near by government school and this lead me an opportunity to work as life skill facilitator  (Guided by a retired Nimhans professor) for children of 10th standard government school.

These classes were held once in a week..., but kids will be looking for these classes eagerly..the affection, enthusiasm shown by these kids make me put in more of my time and look for  innovation  in teaching job...

Now i am really enjoying  being with kids. Since I am not a teacher by profession I thought of educating myself a little bit..so I am doing my M.A. in child psychology..which opened up an opportunity to work as a counselor( kind of teacher job) in Child Guidance center run by charitable trust under the guidance of former  Nimhans doctor..

Yes! My first teaching experience has brought lot of changes in me   and still  trying to evolve as a teacher from software professional...
